The National Motor Freight Traffic Association (NMFTA) is set to introduce significant changes to the National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC) system in 2025. These changes, part of the "Classification Reimagined" initiative, aim to enhance the freight classification user experience, increase system accuracy, and reduce friction between shippers, carriers, and 3PLs.
As the transportation industry approaches the implementation in 2025, the focus throughout the rest of 2024 will be on intensive, informative, and inclusive communication to TLI's shippers & carriers to ensure all parties are well-prepared.
For shippers, the upcoming NMFC changes will simplify several key processes. Identifying NMFC items and freight classes will become much easier, allowing shippers to quickly determine the appropriate NMFC item and class, thus reducing delays and errors. It will be crucial to incorporate handling unit dimensions and weight accurately by measuring and reporting the length, width, height, and weight of handling units to ensure proper classification.
Utilizing TLI’s Transportation Management System (TMS) will also be beneficial, as it includes a built-in density calculator that can automatically retrieve the correct freight class and NMFC code. Additionally, participating in listening sessions will provide opportunities to ask questions, give feedback, and stay informed about the upcoming changes.
The upcoming changes will introduce a standardized density scale, simplifying the classification process when there are no handling, stowability, or liability issues. Commodities will be more clearly identified, especially those with unique handling, stowability, and liability requirements. Accurate dimensions and weight from shippers and 3PLs will be essential for completing the bill of lading correctly.
Expect one standard density scale making classification more straightforward.
The NMFC changes coming in 2025 reflect the current state of LTL freight transport, adapting to evolving products, advancing technology, and new industry methods. Together with the industry, the NMFTA is focused on creating a classification system that simplifies where needed, clarifies where helpful, and enhances efficiency throughout the process. Shippers should stay engaged, stay informed, and prepare now to ensure a smooth NMFC Code transition in 2025.
