Major Changes to NMFC Codes Coming in 2025
Phased Implementation of NMFC Code Updates
The National Motor Freight Traffic Association, Inc. (NMFTA) announced significant changes to the National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC) that will take effect in the first quarter of 2025. These updates will impact carriers, shippers, and third-party logistics providers (3PLs), aiming to reduce confusion and NMFC code reclassifications among all parties involved.
"Up to 3,500 single-class items might be moved to 13 subcategories."

NMFC Code Changes in 2025
To manage the transition smoothly, NMFTA has adopted a phased approach. The initial phase, Docket 2025-1, includes the following key updates:
- Standardized Density Scale: A new density-based scale for Less-Than-Truckload (LTL) freight will be introduced when handling, stowability, and liability issues are not present.
- Unique Identifiers: Freight requiring special handling, stowability, or liability will have unique identifiers for better management.
- Modernized Commodity Listings: Commodity listings will be condensed and modernized for easier reference.
- Enhanced ClassIT Tool: Usability improvements will be made to the ClassIT classification tool.

Benefits of the Upcoming Freight Classification Changes
As the process unfolds throughout 2024, the updates are expected to make workflows more efficient, enhance communication and visibility, and improve overall satisfaction for carriers, shippers, and 3PLs. The NMFTA's director of commodity and standards development, highlighted that up to 3,500 single-class items might be moved to 13 subcategories, streamlining the freight classification system.
NMFTA's Listening Sessions
To facilitate these changes, NMFTA has scheduled LTL Listening Sessions this summer. These sessions aim to gather feedback and provide information on the upcoming updates. The sessions are free to attend and will be held on the following dates:
- LTL Carriers: August 6
- Third-Party Logistics Providers: August 7
- Shippers: August 8
Professionals interested in attending can visit the NMFTA LTL Listening Sessions page for more information and resources.

Preparing for the Freight Class Transition
As 2024 progresses, the process will become more intensive, informative, and inclusive. The goal is to ensure a smooth transition that benefits all stakeholders involved. By attending the listening sessions and staying informed about the changes, carriers, shippers, and freight brokerages can better prepare for the implementation of the new NMFC standards in 2025
