On June 12-16 the CVSA kicked off a 'Road Blitz' enforcement effort specifically targeting hazmat/dangerous goods. The results of the 'blitz' were shocking, as inspectors found violations in three out of every ten hazardous packages.
Over the five-day surprise Hazmat enforcement campaign the CVSA inspectors investigated 8,395 hazmat packages, and determined violations in 2,578 packages. 701 were out-of-service violations.
The violation of hazmat regulation in 30% of of shipments took a team of 37 law enforcement jurisdictions partnering together internationally across the United States & Canada. There were 7,572 unique vehicles transporting hazardous goods that were investigated during the Hazmat Road Blitz.
The 701 vehicles that had out-of-service hazmat violations were promptly removed from the roadways. The penalties are severe, and it is imperative shippers partner with Freight Brokers like TLI that vet carriers on the front end to ensure seamless routing. Carriers that passed the Level 1 inspection without a critical violation were equipped with a CVSA decal, and then continued on to their destination.
“For motor carriers and drivers, safely transporting HM/DG is imperative to the safety of the driver, the public and the environment,” CVSA said. “For inspectors, inspecting vehicles transporting HM/DG is a complex and detailed process that involves safely looking for any leaking materials or unsecured HM/DG cargo, and checking shipping papers, placarding, marking, labeling, packaging and loading compliance.”
A major concern during the enforcement action, was when inspectors discovered eight undeclared packages. According to the PHMSA, 1,500 transportation incidents happen annually due to undeclared hazardous shipping. It is critical that shippers, and carriers are firmly aware of regulations if they are routing hazardous freight. If you are a shipper that needs support, TLI is here to serve.
Last year's five-day hazmat blitz found violations on 28.5% of orders. The Road Blitz is an annual event that has cooperation from many parties including law enforcement, the CVSA, PHMSA, FMCSA, Transport Canada, and the CVSA HAZMAT Committee. Make sure to pay attention to hazmat guidance if your freight falls under their regulatory purview.
