The National Motor Freight Traffic Association (NMFTA) has announced updates to the National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC) system for 2025. This update includes a newly revised NMFC Items List, which is now available for download. The list highlights the most recent changes, marking items as either "In Scope" or "Out of Scope" for Docket 2025-1.
The NMFC system needed an overhaul. It has grown complex and outdated, leading to inefficiencies, excess reclassifications, and confusion. The goal of these changes is to simplify freight classification, making it more user-friendly while reducing friction between shippers, carriers, and 3PLs.
The reimagined NMFC system introduces a standardized approach based on four key factors: density, handling, stowability, and liability. This will simplify NMFC classification and allow for easier and more accurate freight classifications on the first try.
The updated list of NMFC items shows which goods are still under review and which have already been assessed for class changes in Docket 2025-1.

The biggest change for shippers is the simplification of freight class identification. With tools like the ViewPoint TMS, which includes a built-in density calculator, shippers can easily determine the correct class by entering the dimensions and weight of their freight. This ensures an accurate pounds-per-cubic-foot (PCF) calculation for each shipment.
Shippers will also need to report the actual density of what’s shipped, rather than relying on estimates provided in the Bill of Lading (BOL).
Carriers will also need to audit the actual freight density of the shipment, focusing on what’s routed rather than what’s claimed on the BOL. This adds another layer of accuracy to the shipping process, improving overall accuracy.
It's crucial for shippers to enter the correct freight information during BOL creation. If the freight class, dimensions, or weight are entered incorrectly, carriers have the right to reclassify the shipment based on the actual characteristics. When this happens, the reclassification often results in higher charges, as rates can increase significantly. To avoid unexpected costs, shippers must ensure they input accurate details when preparing their shipments. Proper classification helps ensure smoother shipping processes and prevents costly surprises later.
