As a shipper, it's important to understand the differences between the various types of truckload services available. Each type of truckload equipment type offers unique benefits and is best suited for different types of shipments. Many transportation shippers utilize multiple equipment types based off their unique business needs. Here is a brief overview on the differences between the most popular equipment types TLI routes daily.
Dry van truckload is the most common type of truckload service. It involves using a dry van (a type of enclosed trailer) to transport goods that do not require temperature-controlled or special handling. Dry van truckload is best suited for transporting general cargo, such as boxes, crates, and pallets.
Flatbed truckload involves using a flatbed trailer (a trailer with an open top and sides) to transport goods that are too large or too heavy to fit in a dry van. Flatbed truckload is best suited for transporting oversized or heavy items, such as machinery, construction equipment, and steel beams.
Refrigerated truckload involves using a refrigerated trailer (a trailer with a temperature-controlled environment) to transport perishable goods that require temperature-controlled transportation. Refrigerated truckload is best suited for transporting fresh or frozen food, pharmaceuticals, and other temperature-sensitive goods.
Curtain side truckload involves using a curtain side trailer (a trailer with flexible curtains on the sides) to transport goods that require easy access or loading from the sides. Curtain side truckload is best suited for transporting goods that are too tall for a dry van, such as furniture, appliances, and building materials.
Conestoga truckload involves using a Conestoga trailer (a trailer with a retractable roof and sides) to transport goods that require protection from the elements. Conestoga truckload is best suited for transporting goods that are too tall or too wide for a dry van, such as construction equipment, oil and gas equipment, and wind turbine blades as shown in the picture to the left..
Drayage is a specialized type of truckload service that involves transporting goods over a short distance, typically from a port or rail yard to a warehouse or distribution center. Drayage is best suited for transporting goods that are being imported or exported, as it allows for the efficient movement of goods from the port to their final destination.
Hotshots (Gooseneck trailers): Gooseneck hotshots are a type of truckload service that involves using a pickup truck with a gooseneck trailer on short runs that need to be delivered swiftly. These loads are often requested from companies serving industries such as construction or oil because the equipment can be expedited, often driven directly onto the jobsite. The lower cost of equipment means running hot shot gooseneck loads can be an easier way to start a trucking operation. You can use smaller vehicles with hot shot loads, which means you don’t need to invest in a big rig.
