Congressman Mike Gallagher (R-8th/WI) and Congressman Seth Moulton (D-6th/MA) introduced, H.R. 915, the “Motor Carrier Safety Selection Standard Act.” The Motor Carrier Safety Selection Standard would implement an interim motor carrier selection standard that for the first time would require entities like shippers and brokers to verify certain trucking registration requirements before selecting them. Additionally, the bill would require the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) to amend the safety rating process for motor carriers and shift away from the outdated and ineffective current physical audit system.
The TIA President Anne Reinke, an organization representing the $232 billion 3PL industry stated the following: “TIA applauds Congressmen Gallagher and Moulton for their leadership on this critical safety issue. The current carrier selection processes lack clarity, affecting greatly not only our members but also all highway users. This legislation establishes a robust and clear rating process and improves highway safety.”
“The status quo is untenable: 92% of trucking companies are unrated, due to an outdated safety rating system and the number of highway accidents involving commercial motor vehicles increases year over year. Our members and the public need a reliable rating system to eliminate confusion in the supply chain and increase highway safety. This legislation achieves those goals.” Chris Burroughs, VP of Government Affairs for TIA
