CVSA's International Roadcheck Event 2024

Joe McDevitt • May 2, 2024

International Roadcheck Week

Tens of thousands of inspections occur annually during the CVSA’s International Roadcheck event, with Roadcheck 2024 set for May 14-16. Inspectors meticulously scrutinize commercial motor vehicles and drivers, following the CVSA North American Standard Inspection Procedures, along with the applicable safety regulations in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. In previous years, TLI has observed a modest increase in the cost per mile as carriers shut down, and enforcement inspections tie up capacity.

Who is the CVSA?

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) is an international association of government agencies and industry representatives dedicated to improving the safety of commercial motor vehicles (CMVs) and their operators. The CVSA works to standardize safety regulations, standards, and enforcement practices across North America. Through initiatives like the International Roadcheck event, it conducts roadside inspections to ensure compliance with safety regulations, covering areas such as vehicle maintenance, driver qualifications, and cargo securement. Furthermore, the CVSA offers training programs, educational resources, and advocacy efforts to reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities involving commercial vehicles.

What happened during Roadcheck 2023?

Here are statistics from the 2023 Roadcheck event in the U.S.:

  • Over 53,847 Level I, II, and III Inspections were conducted.
  • The overall vehicle out-of-service rate was 19.3%.
  • Of the drivers inspected, 5.8% were found to be out of service.

Roadcheck 2024 is scheduled for May 14-16th

The spotlight for this year’s International Roadcheck will be on:

  1. Controlled Substance and Alcohol Possession
  2. Tractor Protection and Anti-Bleed Back Systems
CVSA's Additional Enforcement Focus:

Additionally to highlighting the 2024 focus areas, the International Roadcheck campaign aims to:

  1. Award the CVSA decal to commercial motor vehicles passing a Level I or Level V Inspection.
  2. Temporarily remove commercial motor vehicles and drivers with out-of-service conditions from roadways until issues are resolved.
  3. Advance CVSA’s mission to ensure consistency, uniformity, and reciprocity in commercial motor vehicle inspections.
  4. Educate both industry and the public about the significance of safe commercial motor vehicle operations and the roadside inspection program.
  5. Gather data for future public reporting.
  6. Offer a snapshot of the out-of-service rate within a specific timeframe.
  7. Make progress toward the overarching goal of reducing commercial motor vehicle crashes, injuries, and fatalities.

Will the CVSA have additional 2024 events?

The CVSA has scheduled additional events for 2024, notably Operation Safe Driver Week from July 7 to 13. This annual initiative, spearheaded by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance, aims to enhance driving behaviors through educational outreach and rigorous enforcement tactics across Canada, Mexico, and the U.S. It targets unsafe trucking practices such as speeding, distracted driving, tailgating, and impaired driving, with drivers possibly facing warnings or citations for infractions. These trucking enforcement weeks historically impact carrier capacity, resulting in a slight uptick in the cost per mile.
