Brake Safety Day: Recap
One-Day Safety Campaign in US, Canada, Mexico
On April 19th 2023 the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance launched a joint break-related inspection. More than one out of every 10 commercial vehicles were sidelined during the enforcement effort due to 'bad brakes'.
The CVSA had inspectors in Canada, Mexico and the US inspect brakes during commercial vehicle inspections, and found 11.3% were "unfit and unsafe for roadways." The CVSA released the results on May 25th, and of 6,829 commercial motor vehicle inspections in three countries, 108 power unites, and 87 towed unit lining/pad violations were identified.
Brake Safety Day is an opportunity to obtain data related to the health and wellness of commercial motor vehicles. During the one-day unannounced inspection and enforcement campaign, certified commercial motor vehicle inspectors conducted their usual vehicle and driver inspections. They reported brake-related data to CVSA for a data sampling of the state of brake systems on the CMVs traversing roadways every day.
CVSA said the top three brake-related out-of-service conditions included:
56 jurisdictions participated in this years commercial vehicle inspection campaign. In the U.S., inspectors placed 11.5% (679 of the 5,901 total) CMVs inspected out of service for brake-related violations. In Canada, 10% (88 vehicles) inspected were placed out of service for brake-related violations. In Mexico, 34 CMVs were inspected with 18% (six vehicles) that had brake-related out-of-service violations and were placed out of service.
Last year, inspectors had a larger sample of 38,117 inspections, and placed 13.3% of vehicles out of service for critical violations associated with braking. CVSA’s Operation Airbrake program holds two safety campaigns each year. This year’s initiatives include a one-day unannounced brake safety inspection and enforcement initiative, and Brake Safety Week, scheduled for Aug. 20-26.
Brake-related violations are the main culprit for commercial vehicles being placed "out of service". The programs goal is to reduce highway crashes caused by faulty braking systems on CMVs. During Brake Safety Week in August 20-26th, commercial motor vehicle inspectors will perform Level I-V inspections to identify braking system violations in an effort to keep the roads safe. TLI will be sure to keep you updated with additional announcements.
